Research has shown that
receiving regular chiropractic adjustments can both relieve
an existing headache and prevent future headaches. A report
released in 2001 by researchers at the Duke University
Evidence-Based Practice Center in Durham, NC, found that
spinal manipulation resulted in almost immediate improvement
for those headaches that originate in the neck, and had
significantly fewer side effects and longer-lasting relief
of tension-type headache than a commonly prescribed
medication. Also, a
1995 study in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological
Therapeutics found that spinal manipulative therapy is an
effective treatment for tension headaches and that those who
ceased chiropractic treatment after four weeks experienced a
sustained therapeutic benefit in contrast with those
patients who received a commonly prescribed medication.
Headache Triggers
Depending on the person and the type of headache, there may
be certain triggers for the headache. The trigger isn’t
always an obvious one. Stress, vitamin deficiency, food
allergies, certain types of lighting, lack of sleep, or
changes in blood sugar are common triggers. If these issues
are identified and addressed, patients usually see a
decrease in the frequency and severity of their headaches.
Tension headaches,
migraines, and cluster headaches are all examples of primary
headaches, in which other causes have been ruled out and the
headache is the primary concern. A large percentage of these
headaches result from muscle tension in the upper cervical
spine. Tight muscles can lead to joint dysfunction in the
neck, restricting the motion of the cervical spine and
causing pain in the neck and head.
How can a chiropractor
help?
Chiropractic adjustments and soft tissue work help to
restore the motion to the spine, remove any interference to
the nervous system, and relax the muscles. Additionally, we
can provide advice on posture and ergonomics to correct any
poor habits that you have developed while sitting at your
desk throughout the day or while sleeping in your bed at
night. This should help in decreasing any recurring muscle
tension and joint irritation.
